چکیده

This paper quantifies the economic benefits associated with the introduction of greater spatial granularity in short-term pricing in the California wholesale electricity market. On April 1, 2009, California switched to a nodalpricing market with an integrated day-ahead forward market and real-time imbalance market from its original zonal market design with bilateral day-ahead scheduling, a real-time imbalance market, and an intrazonal congestion management process. Semiparametric conditional mean functions that control for observable differences in hourly system conditions are estimated for three hourly market performance measures from January 1, 2008 to June 30, 2010 to quantify the change in the conditional means of these three measures before versus after the implementation of the nodal-pricing market. The market performance measures focus on quantifying the economic benefits associated with the operation of the 258 natural gasfired generation units located in the California Independent System Operator (ISO) control area. All but a very small fraction of the fossil fuel–fired generation capacity in California consumes natural gas. Approximately 60 percent of the installed generation capacity in the California ISO control area is natural gas–fired. The remaining capacity is nuclear, hydroelectric, wind, or solar powered. These generation facilities have substantially lower variable costs of production than natural gas units and can therefore be expected to operate if they are available under either market design. The hourly market performance measures are: (i) total amount of energy consumed by natural gas–fired generation units; (ii) total number of starts by natural

Stochastic Optimization of Demand Response Aggregators in Wholesale Electricity Markets

This paper proposes a stochastic framework for demand response (DR) aggregator to procure DR from customers and sell it to purchasers in the wholesale electricity market. The aggregator assigns fixed DR contracts with customers based on three different load reduction strategies. In the presented problem the uncertainty of market price is considered and the risk of aggregator participation is ma...

Application of an Improved Neural Network Using Cuckoo Search Algorithm in Short-Term Electricity Price Forecasting under Competitive Power Markets

Accurate and effective electricity price forecasting is critical to market participants in order to make an appropriate risk management in competitive electricity markets. Market participants rely on price forecasts to decide on their bidding strategies, allocate assets and plan facility investments. However, due to its time variant behavior and non-linear and non-stationary nature, electricity...

Competitive Electricity Market Design: a Wholesale Primer

A short-term electricity market coordinated by a system operator provides a foundation for a competitive electricity market. Combined with long-term contracts for generation and transmission congestion, the spot-market and competitive market pricing can support open access to the transmission grid. INTRODUCTION Electricity market restructuring emphasizes the potential for competition in generat...

How Does Pricing of Day-ahead Electricity Market Affect Put Option Pricing?

In this paper, impacts of day-ahead market pricing on behavior of producers and consumers in option and day-ahead markets and on option pricing are studied. To this end, two comprehensive equilibrium models for joint put option and day-ahead markets under pay-as-bid and uniform pricing in day-ahead market are presented, respectively. Interaction between put option and day-ahead markets, uncerta...

A New Approach for Accurate Pricing of Reactive Power and Its Application to Cost Allocation in Deregulated Electricity Markets

Reactive power management plays an essential role in the secure operation of the power system as an ancillary service. Although in electricity markets, the particular attention is paid to active power, the reactive power also plays an important on total generation costs of electricity. On the other hand, as it is mainly confined to local consumption, to avoid market power and maintain the se...
